Copal is a resin (hardened sap) from the copal tree. It is burned on hot coals from a fire or on charcoal briquettes. Copal is a traditional incense from indigenous cultures in Mexico and Central America. It is burned for purification and healing ceremonies and especially burned for expelling the energy of illnesses or harmful forces such as mal ojo (evil eye), invidia (envy), tristeza (sadness), and pesar (grief).
